Abubakar was born in the early hours of Wednesday 19th of January 1977 at Olalomi hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State to Professor Halidu and Victoria Abubakar. She was an avid reader from early on. She began her education at Mrs. Mortah's Preparatory school, then continued her primary education at Staff School Kongo, Zaria.
